Brand Registry and Trademarks: A Starter Guide for Sellers

If you sell your own branded products on Amazon, Amazon Brand Registry is one of the most valuable programmes available to you. It gives you stronger control over your listings, better tools to report copycats and access to extra advertising and content features. The entry ticket is a trademark. This starter guide explains how the two fit together. It is general information, not legal advice, and both Amazon’s rules and trademark procedures change, so check current requirements and speak to a qualified trademark professional.

What Amazon Brand Registry does

Brand Registry links your brand to your Amazon account, so Amazon recognises you as the rights owner. Benefits typically include:

  • Greater control over the product detail pages for your brand.
  • Tools to search for and report listings that infringe your trademark.
  • Access to A+ Content, which adds images, comparison charts and brand story modules.
  • Sponsored Brands ads and, for eligible sellers, Sponsored Display.
  • A Brand Store, a multi-page shop for your products on Amazon.
  • Brand analytics and search data, which help with keywords and planning.

Amazon may add, change or restrict features by marketplace, so check what applies to you.

Why the trademark comes first

Amazon requires a trademark that is registered, or in many cases a pending application, with an intellectual property office it accepts. The mark must match the brand name shown on your products or packaging. Amazon accepts both word marks, which protect the name itself, and image or design marks that include text, but the rules differ by marketplace, so read Amazon’s current eligibility page.

A word mark is usually the more flexible choice for a brand name because it protects the name regardless of logo design. Your adviser can tell you whether a word mark, a logo mark or both suit your plans.

Where Pakistani sellers can file

Trademarks are territorial: a mark registered in one country does not automatically protect you elsewhere. Sellers generally consider:

  1. The market you sell in: for example the US, UK or EU trademark offices, if you sell on those Amazon marketplaces.
  2. Pakistan: registering with the Intellectual Property Organisation of Pakistan protects your brand at home, which matters if you manufacture or sell here too.
  3. The Madrid System: Pakistan is a member of this international system, which lets you designate several countries through one application based on a home filing. It can simplify management, but each country still examines the mark under its own rules.

Amazon also runs an IP Accelerator programme that connects brands with trademark law firms, and through which some sellers can access Brand Registry features while an application is pending. Check whether it is available for your marketplace.

Steps to enrol in Amazon Brand Registry

  1. Search existing trademarks to make sure your brand name is not already taken in your classes.
  2. Choose the right classes of goods under the international classification system.
  3. File your trademark application, ideally with a professional.
  4. Put the brand name permanently on your products or packaging.
  5. Sign in to Brand Registry with your seller account credentials and submit your brand details, trademark number and product images.
  6. Complete Amazon’s verification, which may include confirming a code sent to the trademark’s correspondent.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a generic or descriptive name that is hard to register.
  • Skipping the search and discovering a conflict after you have printed packaging.
  • Filing in the wrong classes, so the mark does not cover your actual products.
  • Using a filing agent you cannot reach later, which can block Amazon’s verification code.
  • Letting the trademark lapse by missing renewal or use requirements.
  • Assuming Brand Registry stops all problems. It helps, but you still need to monitor listings.
