Interior or Exterior? How to Choose the Right Marble and Finish

White marble texture with soft grey veins

The same marble can behave very differently inside and outside. Choosing the right stone and finish up front prevents slipping, staining and fading later.

Understand the finishes

  • Polished: glossy, shows colour and veining best. Best for walls and low-traffic interiors.
  • Honed: smooth and matte. Less slippery, popular for floors.
  • Textured or flamed: rough and grippy, used for outdoor paving and steps.

For interior walls and floors

Almost any marble works. Choose by look first, then match the finish to traffic: honed for busy floors, polished for feature walls.

For exterior façades

Pick a dense, consistent stone and make sure the supplier confirms it for outdoor use. Thassos White is a well-known example, and it was our choice for the Yadgar-e-Fatah monument.

For wet areas

Use honed or textured finishes underfoot and seal the stone. Clean with pH-neutral products.

Maintenance in short

  • Seal when the supplier recommends
  • Wipe spills quickly, especially acids such as lemon or vinegar
  • Use soft cloths and neutral cleaners
